Super cute cake pops that look like hay bales! Perfect for any farm lover’s birthday party!
My nephew, Riley, turned 9 this year and he wanted cake pops that looked like hay bales. I met my husband a couple weeks after he was born, so I always remember how long we’ve been together based on Riley’s age!
My sister and her husband live on a farm and milk cows, raise cattle, grow crops, and hay in the summer! Initially Riley wanted to do a beach theme for his birthday but shortly after haying season started, he changed his mind to a haying theme. Picture hay bales, tractors, rakes, and balers as decoration for this pure-bred farm boy’s birthday. 😀
As I Googled ideas for hay bale cake pops, all I could find was square bales. They don’t actually make square bales on their farm, only round ones. So, I had to get creative and figure it out by myself! Here are the hay bale cake pops that I came up with. I think they turned out pretty darn cute and he sure loved them!
Here’s How to Make the Cake Pops
I used my cake pop recipe that I always use & absolutely love! The only difference is I put the cake pops on sticks this time. You can find the recipe in this post:

To make the cake pops look like hay bales, I just worked with the cake batter and formed them into a tator tot shape. Then I melted a tiny bit of the chocolate candy melts and coated the tip of the stick in before inserting them into the cake pop and popping them into the freezer. This makes sure that stick is not going to fall out when you dip them later on.
At this point, I decided to try to make a “hay color” which turned out absolutely disgusting and unappetizing. 😝 Apparently mixing colors is out of my range of skills! So, I headed back to the store to pick up more yellow candy melts.
When I got back, I melted the candy melts in the microwave using 30 second intervals. Then I just dipped and tapped. Once the excess chocolate is tapped off, use your finger to swirl the ends. This is how you get the hay bale look. I was actually pleasantly surprised at how much they ended up looking like a hay bale!
To make the letter, I found a silicone mold at Hobby Lobby in the chocolate making section, and just filled up the letters I needed. Be sure to really get the chocolate in there to fill it up completely. Then I refrigerated the mold for 20 minutes and popped the letters out very easily. I used a little of the melted yellow chocolate to attach them to the cake pops.
You will want to store these in the refrigerator until serving. For serving, I decided to use a mini straw bale that I found at Hobby Lobby along with just a basic wood tray I’ve had for years. This would also make a really cute display for fall themed cake pops!
These were gobbled up very quickly by all the party guests! They are always a crowd pleaser-and definitely a kid pleaser. 😂
Don’t mind the messy pants-thats just how we roll 99% of the time now! Lucas kept saying “I want cake pop, I want cake pop, I want cake pop”. Does anyone else’s toddler ask the same question repeatedly until it drives you absolutely nuts?! I always ask “what do you say” and he says “please” in such a cute way it’s hard to say no. Then he always says “tank you” 😍
As always, thanks for taking the time out to read my post and I hope you try these delicious cake pops!
